Kewal Singh Pathania was born on 12 October 1969 in Ret village, Kangra district. Before politics, he represented Himachal Pradesh as a state-level hockey player — a discipline he has carried into decades of public work.
He holds an MA in Political Science (1994) and an LLB (1998) from Himachal Pradesh University. His public life began in college as President of Government PG College, Dharamshala (1987–1991), rising through NSUI to District President and State General Secretary.
He won the Shahpur seat in 2022, defeating BJP's Sarveen Choudhary with 36,603 votes, and has served as Chief Whip and now Deputy Chief Whip of the Congress legislature party since 2024.
